About Washington

Take a wonderfully colorful town, fill it with Nationally registered historic sites, vintage buildings and traditional festivities. Then add modern infrastructures, leading medical facilities and top notch educational programs. Stir in a limitless supply of community events and recreational opportunities and you have “One of the best small towns in America” three time consecutive designation by author Norman Crampton.

Established nearly 175 years ago, in 1939, the town of Washington has grown to be over 7,200 strong. We have been paving the way of progress for decades; we had the first rural county public hospital in Iowa in 1912 and we have not slowed down.

Our businesses and and educational systems may move at a metro pace, but you can rest assured that while in Washington you will enjoy all the small town hospitality and experiences that the residents have come to cherish. Our central southeast location also places us within close proximity to the bustling Iowa City/Coralville area, home of the University of Iowa.

The entire staff of the Washington Chamber of Commerce would like to extend a warm welcome to all, and have provided comprehensive lists and complementary publications about our area for your convenience.
