Washington boasts a top-notch education system for all student's needs, from Pre-Kindergarten to College.

Stewart Elementary School exceeds in excellence, providing lifelong learning through education, music, and arts. The school contains over 520 Pre-School through 2nd grade students, and a specialized staff allowing your child to get the attention that they need. They are proud to announce their new learning center and classrooms for the students, and continually strive to meet the growing and changing essentials of their students.

Nearly 400 students grades 3rd-5th attend Washington’s Community School's, Lincoln Elementary. Six new classrooms, a new cafeteria and the latest in technology offers the children a learning environment that they are sure to excel in. The school has a number of programs for the children to be involved in and also offers a full-time guidance counselor to support the student's growth and development.

The Washington Middle School includes an average of 400 students 6th-8th grade. Having a Middle School allows the students to get that individualized time and guidance, helping them to effortlessly transition from Elementary School to High School fully prepared. The up-to-date computer lab, abundance of extra-curricular activities and array of athletic and music programs offered at this point in your child's education provides them opportunities to grow and succeed their own strengths.

We are proud to announce our new state of the art $15 million Washington High School, giving our students the edge in hands-on training and educational opportunities, preparing them for lifelong learning and productive membership in a global society. The high school has partnered with the local Kirkwood Community College to offer students over 20 classes that will give them college credits, allowing them to graduate high school with a free associate degree!

Washington offers the families of the Washington and WACO school district a phenomenal fully-funded homeschooling opportunity. The local office provides a fully qualified staff of supervising teachers who strive to support the learning experience of your child. They will not only help set up an educational program for your child with materials and optional home visits, but they have weekly sports activities and enrichment classes. Children have the option of joining planned field trips, getting involved in service learning projects and reduced ticket prices for the University of Iowa's Hancher program. The office also offers Iowa Basic Skills Testing annually, giving you everything and more than what your child's education requires.

The Home School Assistance Program offers a student, parent and curriculum library filled with books, magazines, videos and software to benefit and complete your learning/teaching experience and curriculum choices.

Kirkwood Community College-Washington Regional Center (CC)

Students in the Washington area also have access to a local Kirkwood Community College center, one of the Nation’s top Community Colleges, offering one of the lowest tuitions and the most program options in Iowa. The new Regional Center is expanding the opportunities of students and professionals alike, meeting local training and educational needs. High School students will have the opportunity to graduate with their Assosicate degree already under their belt.

Kirkwood also has an extensive list of Continuing Education Classes available for both the Washington Regional Center and on the main campus, allowing local businesses to keep themselves and their staff current in their skills and training while also bringing interest courses such as computer, cooking, ballroom dancing and much much more.


Within 45 minutes of Washington there are three outstanding College Universities available to Washington County.

The University of Iowa is located just north of Washington in Iowa City. University of Iowa is composed of 11 different colleges, all beautifully established on an 1,900 acre campus on the Iowa River. Of the 30,500 students coming to Iowa each year, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has the highest enrollment of their undergraduates. Other colleges include the Henry B. Tippie College of Business, the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and the Colleges of Education, Engineering, Law, Nursing, Pharmacy, the Colleges of Dentistry and Public Health provide graduate education in conjunction with the Graduate College.
